Even the NYT thinks this election pitted the elites versus non-elites: incorrect
New York Times casts this election as a battle between "elites [Clinton] " and "non-elites [Trump]". (see exhibit 1) This statement was only in the print addition. The NYT is wrong. According to the NYT's exit poll data, Secretary Clinton won the vote among the poor (53%-41%) and the working poor (51%-42%) (exhibit 2).
The wealthiest Americans preferred President-elect Trump by a narrow margin. While voters with advanced degrees favored Secretary Clinton 58% to 37%, they are only 11% of all American adults. Many people would prefer not to acknowledge it, but this election was about race, ethnicity, and gender.
