This painting is based on costumes designed by Lavinia Schulz in the early 1920s. Schulz was an avant-garde designer and dancer in Hamburg, Germany. Her costumes were rediscovered in 1988 and are on exhibit at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.
Thanks to Holly Barnes Broughton who posted pictures of the customs, which were part of a special exhibition at the Schirn Kunstalle in Frankfurt. The show was called, “Storm Women, Women Artists of the Avant-Garde in Berlin: 1910-1932. Lavinia Schulz had been part of the Storm group of artists before moving to Hamburg.
